This past weekend, my daughter’s hockey team played in a tournament. What happened next? I’d never seen it before:

A 23-player shootout after a 3-on-3 overtime.

Shootouts are already nerve-wracking. But this? It went beyond the usual best-of-three format. After the first three shooters kept it all tied up, each team started moving down the bench—every single player stepping up, one by one.

When neither side broke the stalemate, they emptied the penalty box and re-started, back at the top of the lineup. Players who’d never been in this situation skated to center ice, facing immense pressure.

You could feel the intensity—on the ice, on the bench, even in the stands.

That unforgettable game left me thinking: this is what business under pressure looks like.

It’s not just luck. It’s preparation. It’s focus. It’s having a plan for when things don’t go as planned.

But sometimes, it comes down to the unpredictable: the bounce of the puck, the angle of a save. And here’s where the lesson applies to all of us:

When you’re overwhelmed or juggling too much, the key is to slow down and focus on the one thing that matters most.

So here’s my challenge for you, as we near the end of January:

What’s the one “big lever” in your business that will have the greatest impact if improved?

Where might you be spreading your team too thin by chasing too many initiatives?

How are you tracking progress, staying accountable, and adapting along the way?

This week, commit to one move that brings clarity, momentum, and results.

P.S. Curious about the shootout’s end? After what felt like an eternity, Maya (my daughter’s teammate) scored. Moments later, Kaylee (our goalie) made the game-winning save.

On Sunday, we played in the championship but fell short in overtime—a weekend full of highs, lessons, and unforgettable memories!
