Two DJs. One playlist.
That’s Spotify’s new leadership model.
This week, Daniel Ek steps down as CEO after nearly two decades. Instead of one new leader, Spotify gets two... Alex Norstrom and Gustav Söderström will now share the top spot as co-CEOs.
It’s a gutsy move, but co-CEO setups are still pretty rare in business. Most companies stick with a single captain for a reason.
It reminds me of coaching youth sports.
Years ago, I tried co-coaching a U11 baseball team. We both wanted to help, but every tough call...who plays where, how we practice, ended up in a debate. The kids were confused. So were the parents, and I was too. Turns out, when everyone’s in charge, nobody really is.
Spotify is betting that two leaders can keep their playlist moving. My bet? You need one clear boss. Otherwise, you end up with confusion, no matter how great the playlist is.
