A few summers ago, I experienced something remarkable that perfectly demonstrates the power of what I call "Trophy Experiences" in business.
While taking my daughters to see Frozen on Broadway, something unexpected happened. During the show's intermission, while chatting with a well-known actor seated behind us, a theater representative approached.
"Excuse me... are you Mr. Fleming?" he asked, looking directly at me.
"Why yes, that's me!" 😀
He presented my daughters with special Frozen gift bags, saying: "This is just a small token from your friends at Broadway for the work you've done with us."
The actor looked genuinely impressed. My daughters were thrilled.
And I was reminded of a fundamental business truth:
The most powerful marketing doesn't feel like marketing at all.
Broadway didn't send a generic corporate gift.
They didn't email a discount code.
They created a memorable moment that:
Made my daughters feel special...
Demonstrated they were truly paying attention...
And created a story I'm now sharing with thousands of professionals...
What was the cost? Minimal. The impact?
I've told this story dozens of times, written about it, and will remember it for years.
Every business has these opportunities hiding in plain sight.
Not mass-market promotions but individual moments of connection that transform customers into passionate advocates.
