The Empty Chair Syndrome: When Your Team Is Present But Actually Absent

At a major industry trade show a few years back, I saw something that perfectly explains why companies with basicallt identical products can experience dramatically different results.

Across the convention floor sat a VP of Sales at what was easily the most empty booth in the venue - a single cocktail table, two chairs, and a handwritten sign reading "Wanted: Sales Manager."

For nearly two days, he barely looked up from his laptop as thousands of potential customers and qualified candidates walked past. When I finally approached him out of curiosity, I learned his $20M company was experiencing "sluggish sales."

In my mind I'm thinking, "You don't say!?" 😂

This company had invested thousands in booth rental, airfare, hotel, and materials - only to have their representative essentially check out mentally while physically present.

This is what I call the "Empty Chair Syndrome" - when your team shows up but isn't truly present.

The VP would likely report back to leadership about "successful trade show attendance" and secure budget for next year. But who was watching what actually happened?

This scenario plays out daily across businesses:

The retail staff mindlessly asking "Finding everything okay?" while scanning the room

The sales team that follows scripts but misses buying signals

The customer service representatives who resolve issues but create no connection

The most dangerous gaps in your business aren't the ones you know about - they're the ones hiding in plain sight while everyone collects a paycheck.
