They searched everywhere for a leader, turns out she was already in the room.
A client needed a new sales leader.
They considered every option:
• Promoting their strongest performer
• Hiring externally
• Using a recruitment firm
• Poaching from a competitor
They were ready to move fast. But before they did, I asked for one thing: let me meet with the entire sales team first.
I sat down with every rep. Listened to how they worked. Watched how they interacted. Paid attention to who they turned to for advice.
One name kept coming up—someone they hadn’t even considered.
Not the top seller.
Not the loudest voice.
But the person people trusted.
The rep who teammates leaned on when deals stalled. The one who helped onboard new hires. The one who understood why customers said yes—and why they walked away.
I told my client: This is your next sales leader.
It felt like a risk. But six months later:
• Team-wide revenue jumped 38 percent
• New reps ramped up twice as fast
• Retention and morale soared
The lesson? The best leaders don’t just hit targets—they help others hit theirs.
Who’s someone you’ve seen step up before they had the title?
