Your internal team can cost you more business than your competition. Today I read a story from a business owner who lost a significant contract because of their own internal process breakdown.
Here’s the short version:
– They sell janitorial supplies to schools.
– A school sent out a bid for products they regularly supply.
– The person handling bids in their office never flagged it to the rep responsible for the account.
– Worse, they submitted the bid with non-compliant products and were disqualified.
It gets even better.
When the owner asked (again) for future bids to be sent to him for review, the employee didn’t own the mistake.
No apology. No accountability.
Just deflection and a passive-aggressive, “You do them then.”
Here’s the brutal truth:
Your growth isn’t just about sales strategy or customer acquisition.
It’s about internal trust, communication, and ownership.
Most businesses lose millions not because of competition, but because their internal execution is sloppy and their people refuse to take responsibility.
Mistakes happen. But doubling down on a mistake instead of owning it? That’s how you bleed customers quietly until it’s too late.
If you’re a leader, here’s your action item today:
You also need to audit your internal processes, not just your people.
Are you relying on hope instead of process?
Are your people forced to defend mistakes because there’s no clear system that protects them from failure?
These things are never external problems. They’re inside the walls.
