Jeff Bezos just overhauled The Washington Post’s opinion section, cutting out opposing viewpoints and reshaping the paper (once again) in his own vision.
75,000+ subscribers canceled overnight. Add that to the 200,000+ who left last fall.
Bad business? Maybe.
Or maybe this was never about business at all.
Most companies narrow their focus to attract ideal customers.
Bezos is narrowing The Post to reflect his ideal worldview.
This raises a bigger question….is this strategy or stupidity?
Or maybe it doesn’t even matter when you have “Bezos money!”
Is he building an audience and getting closer to his ideal customer, or shaping the world in his image?
When does shrinking your reach = smart business, and when does it become pure ego?
