Last year, I filmed in Santa Barbara with painfully red, swollen eyes.
Everything was foggy. I worked twice as hard just to see clearly.
It reminded me of what I’ve been noticing in leadership teams lately:
They’re pushing harder than necessary — not because the work is hard, but because the vision is blurry.
And most of the time?
It’s not a strategy issue. It’s a candor issue.
When people can’t speak up, the problems stay hidden.
And what should be obvious becomes painfully unclear.
If you want clarity, start here:
At the end of your next meeting, ask:
“What’s one thing you don’t want to tell me right now?”
If you get silence — that’s your answer.
The most dangerous problems are the ones no one feels safe enough to say out loud.
➡️ Leading a team? Try this question. Then come back and tell me what happened.
